I heard one of the Craighead County Jailer Units From Mtn. Home Check In With Craighead County A Little While Ago and it got me to thinking.
I know with an AWIN radio you can hear your traffic from across the state but we can't do that on scanners, Can someone explain why you can take an actual awin radio across the state and still hear and talk to your home dept. but we can't do that on scanners and we can just hear one area? Something that's possible on those radio's should be able to be done on a scanner shouldn't it?
Anyone care to explain the difference on why it's not possible to do that on a scanner?

Brian, I think it has been posted before.

An AWIN radio automatically communicates with the closest tower so the system knows what tower the radio is receiving. The tower also knows what talkgroup the radio is set to receive. The system will route the audio from the desired talkgroup to that tower so the AWIN radio can receive it, no matter where the radio is located in the state.

Now, a scanner just monitors the system. It cannot communicate with the system to tell what talkgroups the scanner is monitoring. So your scanner is just going to pick up what talkgroups are being transmitted on the tower you are monitoring.

So no, your scanner cannot do what an AWIN radio does, as your scanner cannot communicate with the system.

As wrr20891 said, your AWIN scanner uses "location based scanning" that means that you will normally only pick up radio traffic going thru the AWIN tower site that is closest to you (unless you are getting a strong signal from other sites also). You will only pick up talkgroups in your area, unless someone talks to, or thru the tower site you are monitoring.

An actual AWIN radio communicates with its closest tower, transmitting all sorts of information to it, in a nut shell, lets it know what talk group its on and so forth. Thus, giving it the abiltity to mobilize all necessary tower sites letting it talk to the other radios monitoring the same talkgroup whether its "across the street, or across the state"... Some talkgroups are transmitted thru towers statewide, such as MAC Call, you can monitor this talkgroup no matter where you are in the state.

Maybe this helps, kinda confusing at first but hopefully you get the idea.

Wirelessly posted (TELECA-/2.0 (BREW 3.1.5; U; EN-US; SAMSUNG; SPH-M800; Teleca/Q05A/INT) MMP/2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

That makes sense, so to hear across the state I'd have to get an actual awin radio...I can't afford that...haha
Thanks Guys..
What's the difference in stat and roam settings, which do you recommend using?

Even if you can afford a digital radio that is capable of working on the AWIN system, you could not get it programmed and have access to the system unless you are with an organization that has access. And at that, the template that would be programmed into the radio would only cover certain authorized talkgroups for the organization.

For example, a radio programmed for a fire department would not have access to certain ASP, AHP, S/O channels, DOC channels, etc. It might have access to the common Med channels. Even an authorized user couldn't take in a list of all the talkgroups listed on this site and say they wanted all of those talkgroups programmed into the radio. Well, they could say it, but it wouldn't happen. :)

About the only common thing all of the AWIN radios have is the MAC channels. Beyond that, the programming is a matter of what organization owns the radio and what is that organization's level of authorized access to the system.

That Makes Sense On The Programming, i was just curious how as it would work anyways, I don't plan on trying it, lol

I have been setting to STAT and scan every CC on every pass, But I don't know if ROAM would work better and if it did I don't know what to set the Numbers as.. Anyone have any idea? Milf?
