How best to monitor ASP Troop A

I am trying to determine the best way to reliably monitor ASP Troop A with a BCD436HP. Living in Benton, there is an AWIN site but it seems to rarely pop up with ASP usage. Shinall Mountain seems to get the most usage but is not providing all the traffic I know is out there. Does the Little Rock Metro Simulcast provide the Troop-wide coverage I seek?

Anyone know whats going on on the DHS TG? They were talking about a dog scenting on a trail and trying to get back to it. Sounds like a search but dont understand why they're using Dept of Human Services TG.

As a follow-up to my previous post, it seems the problems I was having were completely reception-based upon my actual location. I did some monitoring today in Little Rock where I was able to get four or five bars on the reception meter and received great results on both Shinall Mountain and the Little Rock Metro Simulcast sites. I'll need a better antenna to monitor at home.

I seem to get all the Troop A and Highway police traffic on the LR Simulcast site. Its actually the only site I have programmed to scan. I really should add a few more to see if I am missing any Saline Co traffic.

To properly follow ASP, you actually want to program in ALL the sites that you can receive. As with any mobile unit on an wide area TRS, as the unit travels, it switches from site to site as its radio gets the best "capture" of an given site and affiliates with it. With the Simulcast, all traffic from all 3 sites is shared simultaneously between them. So anywhere in the coverage of those 3 towers and an radio affiliates, you will hear its traffic on all 3 of them. Most ASP units in the Little Rock area will affiliate with the original stand alone sites as they get in "capture" range of them. Once the simulcast is fully up to speed and fully linking to the surrounding area in the zone, things could get interesting for monitoring ASP, AHP, etc...

To illustrate this properly, lets say an ASP unit gets into an chase that goes from far East of Little Rock, proceeds through Little Rock, and finally is terminated in lets say, Lonoke? As the trooper drives along, his radio will move close to several sites of the AWIN. While in the "capture" area of each site, his radio will affiliate and you can hear traffic on that site. As the chase moves on, his radio will find the next site and so on. Now if there is an person with an AWIN radio with ASP A's TG's programmed into it that affiliates on a site near you, then you will hear all ASP A's traffic as long as that radio is affiliated, and powered on. And being near Little Rock, you literally could hear traffic from any, and all ASP Troops as units from every district are always coming to Little Rock for multiple reasons.

Milf you should wiki this for quick reference. This has to be told over and over. It's good info.

That way we can just post the link

This indicates they may finally have the site in full wide area trunking, and powered up to 100 %....

"Unknown" Departments on AWIN

Thanks for the info. Since I see you are also using a 436HP and monitoring the LR Simulcast site, have you ever noted traffic in the "Department" window (the middle of the screen) showing "Unknown" as the department? There are a variety of IDs that pop up - obviously from a variety of agencies and users based on the conversations. I would like to skip the "Unknown" departments but when I tap "Avoid" the only thing avoided is the individual ID. Is there a way to avoid the unknown department?

Until that TG/group of TG's... is properly ID'ed and entered into the DB, it will be an UNKNOWN. Any help ID'ing unknown TG's is greatly appreciated. We can't put it in the DB until it is ID'ed. And we depend on you guys for that information! :)

MILF, That was an excellent explanation and I agree with SafetyOBC it should be widely shared. Thanks much.

Can we change Little Rock Police Dispatch 2 and Dispatch 3 to something other than Dispatch, and change the Service Type to Law-Tac? These are the old "channel 8 and channel 9" that are used to run license checks and other mundane stuff...not for dispatching.

Who updates this page: Arkansas Wireless Information Network (AWIN) - The RadioReference Wiki

I went to Russellville today, and was picking up some towers from the database, but they arent showing on this map. Seems like lots of sites have been added since this page was done.

Just for reference, I was able to receive the Shinall Mountain site all the way to Adkins. The Old Motorola 2 system on Ozark point was coming in with some static as well.

I was using a 5db gain wilson 800Mhz antenna on the roof of a Sprinter (pretty tall). Quite impressive.

One thing. For several weeks I was getting zip on Little Rock Simulcast. I have a RS PRO-18. I went into the software, and; lowered the digital threshold from 95/85 to 85/60. I then started receiving an abundance of traffic. Got Faulkner Co., Johnson Co., Grant Co., etc. I left wildcard active. At this time, it appears that Radio Reference has 99.9% of the channels properly tagged. As the situation with Little Rock is at present, fluid. I would say just hang on. At first, LRPD was using encryption; but have since ceased to do so on the basic dispatch channels. NLRPD is still encrypted, but; I am hoping they will follow suit. What we need to do is just wait. See what happens and report to the moderators what we find. I had feared for months that scanning was dead in central Arkansas. However, it is not. It is simply in a transition period. Just my opinions. 73's.

As an added note, the Pulaski Co. Sheriffs, Maumelle PD and FD, Sherwood PD and FD, and the individual hospitals are still using the old Little Rock Public Service analogue Motorola system. Lots of traffic still on that.

I tried to pick up Conway today, while I was working there. Wanted to see how many wrecks they had in their Rome style "roundabout" campaign :) Didnt get squat. Found out when I got home that they are encrypted too. Did get to listen to some unknown cops/fbi all last night, and all morning, following this guy around little rock. Had about 5 cars tailing him everywhere he went. Only heard them say something about him killing his wife. It was on one of those interop mac channels. Pretty fun listening.

I really am liking this system. I was picking up Jonesboro ASP from Russellville. Clarksville comes in quite a bit. Since you apparently know about this stuff, what would a good setting for these new scanners be for Little Rock Simulcast? Currently they default to Threshold AUTO, and Threshold LEVEL 8. I have no idea what those mean. The Threshold has three options, AUTO MANUAL and DEFAULT. I am getting Grant Co, and some of those you mentioned already. I havent changed anything on the scanner from defaults, since I dont know what half that stuff does.
