Has anyone, yet, heard the AWIN system from Memphis? I can't hear it standing on the bluff overlooking the river. I believe that the Shell Lake site was thought to be the closest. How do these guys communicate when they are in West Memphis???????
Coverage is OK in West Memphis, but as soon as you get just a very few miles into Memphis, it goes dead. There's a short stretch on I-40 east of Memphis where it comes back in, but it's gone again for good before you get to the Shelby County line. I don't think I ever hit the site scan button to see which site was being received before the signal faded.
The Shell Lake Tower may have the antenna pattern aimed toward the west so that not much signal goes into Tennessee.
I can monitor the Burdette site on 866.5500, both Troop C and Troop D traffic monitored.
Have an 800-Mhz in attic and Rad shack 800 with GRE preamp. Depending on WX conditions, I usually recieve 75% signal up to 96%.
You are probably experiencing the wonders of different types of modulation.
A simplified explanation is:
The nature of digital is that it is all or nothing.
Analog, however, will carry further, and although it may be scratchy the further one is away from the transmission tower, it can still be heard until the signal degrades to nothingness.
I was driving back fron Jackson, MS Thursday nite around 8pm and I could hear Phillips County SO & AR State Police from just south of Clarksdale on US 49.
First catch was near Mattson between Clarksdale & Tutwiler. Pretty good signal strength too. The AWIN tower @ Walnut Corner (US 49 & AR 1) is about 30 - 40 as the crow flies.
Clear & cool night.....PSR 500 with original duckie......mounted on a suction mount on the windshield of my van.
I could hear ASP well after I crossed the Helena bridge and well down US 61, but I turned that bank off before I got to Clarksdale on my way southbound Wednesday afternoon.
Next time I go I'll make a point of seeing how far down I can hear.......
I'm in Cordova, TN.. I can't seem to hear any AWIN at all. I guess its because of what that other guy said about the antennas pointed further into AR or whatever.
But would a small yagi aimed toward AR help get some of that AWIN goodness over here in Cordova?
