LAKEWOOD - Police shot and killed a baby bison after spending much of Saturday afternoon trying to capture it as it roamed along 6th Avenue.
Lakewood Police say people first spotted the bison around 12:30 Saturday afternoon running up and down the South 6th Avenue frontage road near Gladiola.
Authorities say they were first notified about the bison around 8 a.m.
Police cornered the bison at McIntyre, but despite their efforts, the bison broke free from a makeshift corral and continued its tour of Lakewood.
Lakewood Police shot and killed the bison around 2:15 p.m. near 1st and Flora.
Lakewood Police spokesman Steve Davis says the sergeant on the scene was worried the bison was going to hurt someone, or itself, so they had to shoot it.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office were trying to help to capture the animal.
Police say the bison was a domestic animal and had come down from Rooney Valley where it was owned by a man named Mike Gebell, who owns two bison there.
