Hi guy's,
can you do anything else with a baby monitor? My DOT uses lo-vhf, and this monitor I found sends a signal of 49.870-csq. I'd have to find a way of lessing it by 2.530 mnz, and add a pl of 167.9

Well, at least it took 4 replies before it happened.

Do you have legal authority to transmit ?

In reading the OP's query, I'm thinking he's wanting to modify a baby monitor to hear this DOT, not transmit on it.
And the PL addition would circumvent having to hear open static when they're not talking.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it's the way I read it.

If that was true why would someone be wanting the PL tone (used for transmitting) just for receiving ?

To the OP , go and get a cheap scanner if you want to hear them , much easier

to break squelch.
the same reason they are listed here on the RR db.

sometimes it's nice to be able to use what you already have instead of just throwing it away and getting something else.

but I suppose that is the mindset of a lot of people these days living in a disposable society.

Because in our Region (New England) the use of PL/DPL is used to
a.) Limit reception to only that Agency (frequencies are re-used near-by)
b.) Prevent hearing Skip when the Band Opens.

PL/DPL is not just a Transmit access use

However, yes, why waste time mucking up a baby monitor when a cheap analog scanner would do.

You most likely won't be able to add the PL since those devices don't have it built-in.

Lowering the frequency? You might changing a crystal if it uses crystals. But you are farther ahead buying a used scanner which may cost less than the crystal you would need.

Well, I figured the reason the OP wanted PL is so he don't hear open carrier when they are not talking.

And as far as baby monitors at the Goodwill, they are a great deal for audio security.
I have one transmitting in my garage, and the receiver in my bedroom.
At the church I go to, there is a transmitter in the church, and a receiver in the parsonage next door. About a year ago, a contractor near me with a work truck full of equipment thwarted a robbery because he had a transmitter in his truck, and a receiver in the house.

Cheap security for about $10 a set at the second hand store.

And if you wanna have some scanning fun, if you know the freq range for the baby monitors you can program that into your scanner and listen to them just to see how far ya can hear `em, i used to do that with my old RS PRO 2003 desktop unit when i lived on the southeast side of town and with a good antenna on my unit i could pull them units in from a few blocks away (city terrain, houses with open areas in between). You would be suprised just how far them things will transmit, and they only run mabey a watt tops, more like half a watt on simplex, but still, for the low power they run they can get out there given the right conditions and a good gainy antenna :).
