Just trying to figure out how to work the backlighting on the gre per 500, what i would like is for the back light to just come on when a frequency is tuned in and on, is this possible?

Yes

I usually run the display dark at night so it won't keep me awake but accidently turned it on for a few channels. Kept lighting up all night whenever those frequencies hit and waking me! Pain in the backside to finally figure out what the offenders were and fix them.

The thing is, unless you program the scanner by computer, you will have to change the setting one frequency at a time. Tedious, to say the least.

You want to change the backlight mode to "on" and it will light up whenever that particular channel goes active.

Yep - just pull down the "backlight" setting in WIn500 and select "On" or "Flash"

The backlight can only be turned on, off or flash mode. The LED light can be either flashing or solid.

Not sure why I was quoted - that's what I said And the LED light can be dark.
