Stunning con breakout
Gunmen assault guards as prisoner left hospital appointment, flee in Corrections van
By ROB LAMBERTI, SUN MEDIA
Last Updated: 25th November 2009, 4:02am

Two gunmen staged a daring breakout of a prisoner pal by overpowering two prison guards at Hamilton General Hospital yesterday.

Police alerts were issued throughout the GTA following the 11:26 a.m. escape from the hospital at Victoria Ave. and Barton St. by Fawad Ahmed Nouri, 25.

The prisoner was leaving the hospital yesterday with two guards after a regularly scheduled visit.

Sgt. Terri-Lynn Collings said the guards were escorting Nouri out of the hospital when they were knocked to the ground by the two gunmen.

"It was when they were on their way out with him after the appointment when two suspects pushed them down," she said.

"He's got an appointment and I wouldn't think it would be coincidental they (the two gunmen) just happen to be there," Collings said.

The men wore surgical masks and pulled up their hoodies.

The three men -- with Nouri wearing a prison-issue orange jumpsuit, then fled in a Correctional Services van, hitting an ambulance while escaping.

The van was later found abandoned at Victoria and Birge St., about a block away. The men took off in a silver Tiburon.

The three apparently have a scanner capable of monitoring police calls.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from the hospital in a bid to identify the two gunmen, Collings said.

ARMED ROBBERY

Nouri had been shot in the arm by Hamilton Police in January following an armed robbery of a Tim Hortons on Stone Church Rd. and Upper James St.

Nouri and co-accused Todd Fenty, 26, are charged in the heist and a high-speed chase and gunbattle with police shortly after the coffee shop was robbed on Jan. 23.

Six years ago, Nouri was accused of pointing a sawed-off shotgun at a Toronto Police officer and reaching for her gun following an armed robbery at a flea market.

He was captured in that case following a wild high-speed pursuit near his home turf of River St.

There was no mention of them having a scanner in the City Wide alerts sent out to TPS yesterday...

Either way, bad news. But, we already knew Hamilton is going the way of the circle slash anyway...

Yeah, I believe that there was an error in that article. Some of the CPIC broadcasts on the day that it happened said that the suspects had a "Hamilton radio" and to use caution. I don't think that it was a scanner.

HPS will use it as a reason for going encrypted when it's time to renew or replace trunking systems. Misinformation is a very bad thing!

If it was an inhouse radio from the jail well then it would be either a simplex channel or a low power inhouse repeater.
If it was an Orca Tait portable then all they will hear is the radio comms from the MOC VR repeater channel.
Never the less, they would be in the loop until the battery dies.

How would encryption change the outcome of this event?

It doesn't. But it's "evidence" that Motorola salesmen will use to push encrytion when the RFP comes out from Hamilton.

If your government leaders believe that encrypting will prevent someone from stealing a radio, they don't deserve to be in a position of leadership.

Two things Rdale? Do you understand the mindset and mentality of Canadian people or are you one of those people, probably a great majority of Americans IMO who believe that the world stops out side its borders?
We are not as angry and full of distrust at our various levels of governments. Our nation was settled with gov't help, you guys jumped in stage coaches and made your way to the wild west. We went out west with towns built for us by large companies or the railways.

That said if whatever governments want to encrypt they will, there isnt as much a demand for scanning and noone is going to lobby to have radio communications 'readable.' There is no great outcry or fear up here that we are missing out on comms. There is no movement on here that I see in some of the posts in the tavern that we are ENTITLED to listen to our police, etc. The only people *****ing are us and we dont have the manpower $ or numbers.

Finally, something you might not know about Canada, it is not as fragmented as your numerous cities and towns, most of the area to the east of you has been amalgumated into mega towns and counties and cities, the structure is totally different than the many towns and feifdoms around your burn out city core aka Detroit.

As for Hamilton, it is a city that is struggling, (although not in any way near your declining rust-belt cities like Flint) hit hard by the recession, $ is tough to come by but when there aging Motorola radio system needs to be replaced it will probably be encrypted.

Thats life

If your leaders are dumb enough to pay a lot more money for encryption, just because of this one story with completely erroneous claims, then you better start distrusting them.

I don't think 1 story, is going to suddenly have radio comms encrypted with in a few weeks. Its a process, and it takes a while. So if hamilton has already started the ball rolling on this, it wasnt because of this story. They just have to watch what they say, until they have an encrypted communication.

Although paying more for a radio system with encryption may be stupid, I still don't think its anywhere near the stupidity of the leaders the US has thrown upon the world..

or... how about that Austrian language?

"It was also interesting to see that political interaction in Europe is not that different from the United States Senate. There's a lot of -- I don't know what the term is in Austrian -- wheeling and dealing -- and, you know, people are pursuing their interests, and everybody has their own particular issues and their own particular politics."
