Is it normal to hear these "bad" transmitions on SPEN 1? By bad, I mean language wise, for example this is what I heard recently...

"Is there a specific location you would like my officer to go to?"

"Your mom's house!"

I heard that on SPEN lol! I was pretty shocked. Is it someone with a stolen radio or it could be just anyone because all dispatch centers and even cops have that frequency. Do you guys monitoring SPEN ever hear these types of things?

This has been going on since SPEN was started in the mid 80's. You'll find most of it occurs on midnight shifts.

All the time... and at least ONCE around christmas time, you will hear, "Grandma got run over by a reindeer".

IMHO, it's calmed way down over the last 10 years. At times you would hear a symphony of ID tags as dozens of "operators" would key up and release as quick as possible.....

For the longest time I thought "Knock it off North Bergen" was a callsign..........

and the same inmature jerk's that do that can't do it on their town frequencies because everyone would know it was them.operating under the cloak of anonymity take's no ball's whatsoever.i once caught someone doing it on my town's spen 1. i read him the riot act. IT STOPPED !. wait until one of these clown's get's someone killed or injured because they can't communicate with a mutual aid town on a pursuit or something.i'm sure that the vast majority of the jerk's doing this are not career police communication's operator's.

I remember Fair Lawn Police's temporary dispatch setup several years ago when they were renovating. The had a telephone style remote set up for SPEN. On it was a sticker that said.....

CB Radio for Cops

Now mind you these are the same guys that made paper cutouts of fish, seaweed, etc and taped them to the inside of the glass window in the new dispatch area during construction. Made it look like an aquarium.

They don't call most of these dispatch centers the 'fish bowl' for nothing!

I used to work the midnight shift on Edison Squad #1 on Tuesday nights, and you should have heard the stuff they did on the old 453.525 primary at 3 in the morning!!! :D

Since no one else will point this out, I will.

You have an avatar of a Garfield Police Department Patch and inappropiate SPEN transmissions are news to you? Plus you have been registered on RR since 2005.

What say you?

Most SPEN base radios throw out a DTMF sequence at the end of their transmission. I always assumed, the NJSP would be able to ID what PD was transmitting. These jokers would be caught if this was the case. So why the DTMF after the transmission?

Someone mentioned long ago that the DTMF ID was supposed to stop the monkeying around on SPEN 1. Problem is everyone and their brother has SPEN in their patrol cars and portables, so yeah they dont have IDs programmed.
