Balt City PD VHF

Heard a few units (didn't catch their numbers) on PD Citywide 1 mention that they were trying to make contact on VHF, but were not successful. From the way they were talking, it sounded as if the VHF freqs/radios were somewhat new to them. Mo (or anyone else)....do you know of any active VHF freqs for PD?

Hmm...for the most part the City PD were on UHF in the days pre-trunking. The use of 'Citywide' suggests they might have been thinking of the old 453.2 freq.

The same thing happened with a DEA drug bust several weeks ago. I guess more than a few folks don't know that the city left the UHF system years ago.

VHF?

I was working in West Baltimore yesterday and noticed a marked Baltimore City K-9 cruiser with what appeared to be a VHF whip mounted on the roof of the car. I noticed only 1 whip, so I don't think it was a LoJack setup.

Yes, very curious....the units I heard that day sounded like ID or Narcotics and were referencing their "VHF radios"....the City PD units couldn't make contact with one another on VHF and therefore had to switch back to 800.

Here's a thought - these sorts of operations might be using the VTAC channels?? I know that's pure speculation, but the circumstances might fit....just a random thought.....73s Mike

that may be the case, but if i recall... the city's TA freq are some of the ITAC channels

While its possible it could be ITAC, I tend to think not, since the repeaters have all been silent for months (they could have been simplex, tho). However, the reference to VHF and the fact that maus92 saw what he said looked like a VHF hi whip on a K9 unit would tend to discount it, unless the whip was VERY short - like about 1/2 inch or so.

How about it, Maus92? About how tall was this whip you saw? if it was around 15 inches, it's VHF; if it's a stubby 1/2 incher, it's 800....

I don't have a radio capable of narrow band....yet....darn....73s Mike

Hey,

I was over a foot long - I'd say it was VHF. BTW, the BPD cars that have 800 mhz whips usually have them mounted on the trunk lid, are black in color, and are very stubby!
