I'm trying to find some rail frequencies in my area (if there are any new ones) and I was wondering what the bands are for rail frequencies and if they can get into the UHF range or if they're VHF only

You can find this information in the RadioReference database. Using the location-based tools in the database, you can find the railroad frequencies for your area.

The North American railroad frequency pool can be found here:

Two freqs I have found useful in the UHF range are 452.93750 and 457.93750 which are the head-of-train-device and end-of-train-device (HOTD and EOTD).

I can tell a train is not far away and possibly whether it's moving toward or away from my location when I hear the crunch sound on one of them, which can be useful when trying to capture video.
