• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I was a cop for 32 years. I remember being shot at one time a long time ago. He missed, though, so I guess it didn't matter.
I once had a neighbor who interfered with my sleep when I worked midnights by playing music too loud. That means that all neighbors interfere with my sleep by playing music too loud.

Funny. I use my personal Baofeng UV82HP at work and no one at the train yard complains about interference with their issued ICOMS on the same frequency. This is a non issue for the majority of people. Especially when using PL Codes which anyone who is serious about interference should be using anyway.
It’s the same frequency so the only interference would be a double key. PL tones only help with opening the squelch. Interference can cause issues even when using them. They don’t fix interference.

I am willing to bet that if I’m on one repeater with a Baofeng and you are on another or even on the same one, it will not affect you. Same can be said on simplex. It’s a non issue. Some here act like it’s an EMP.

I think that means you go after the problem and don't ignore it.

With CCRs, it's too little, too late.

Many others who are much smarter than me said the have analyzed them and found spurious emissions. Unless you have some actual data proving otherwise, it’s just speculation. Frankly, I don’t believe it’s a good idea to keep using one knowing it likely is emitting beyond where it should be.

The November 2015 issue of QST has a lovely story about the ARRL testing ham HT's for spurious emission compliance. If you look this up, you will see that Baofeng and Wouxun consistently failed these tests. They even have screen shots of the spectrum analyzer showing the amount of fail going on. If you Google this, you will find the PDF with the results.

"no one at the train yard complains about interference" You just don't get it. You have no clue what we are talking about with this magic voo doo "spurious emissions" do you ? It's not folks on the frequency you are talking on, it's the folks on other frequencies that hear YOU when they shouldn't. That's not cool.

Folks, the cheap, Chinese radio issue has been debated over and over. The folks who see no issue with them are probably not going to be convinced. There's nothing to be gained from arguing with them.

The point of the article referenced by the OP was that an amateur radio operator, upon finding someone on an isolated trail who was having a medical emergency, was able to establish communications with people who could render aid. The amateur radio operator could have been using a Motorola APX8000 or a home-made transmitter that amplified the oscillations of a 555 timer. In this case, the amateur radio operator was using a Baofeng. The radio doesn't matter as it was just a tool that helped save someone's life. Nothing more.
