• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I've seen people around here trying to claim that "bao feng" literally means bear turd, linking to the laughably unreliable Urban Dictionary to back them up. No matter what you think about the various radios they make, where they may be appropriate or not to use, etc, this is a weird bit of silly misinformation.

Baofeng is a county in Pingdingshan. The Chinese didn't name their county "bear turd" or whatever other fanciful crap some rando on the internet jammed into Urban Dictionary. It means "storm wind" or more literally "strong/proud wind" apparently.

So maybe cool it with the bear turd business. Nobody says Kenwood is named after some dude named Kenneth's aroused state or whatever.

Junk by any other name is still.......Junk
Yes, fine, but the name doesn't literally translate to "junk". Rail against it, describe why it's terrible and anyone who ever bought one should feel bad. Just don't pass around dumb stuff like the name translates to bear turd.

Does this hurt your feelings?
No, of course not. I'm not sure what your problem is, exactly, but spreading disinformation is never a worthwhile endeavor. Combating it often is.

It could mean different things depending on the tone accent or in different dialects.
Not bear turd, no. The only other inflection option changes it to mean close something up with a seal, like a letter or package.

BaoFengs are fine for hobby use. I don't think anyone really cares if a ham uses them

Where the issue usually arises is when people start claiming they are as good as commercial/public safety LMR radios.

They aren't. That's been established. They don't compare. I've had people put these radios on one of my systems, then complained loudly about the radio system being "crap". Funny thing was when we replaced it with a "real" radio, the radio system worked fine.

Name calling is just childish stuff, probably just out of frustration. I wouldn't worry about it. As for the translation, thanks to the internet, anyone can say what they want. Doesn't make it true. Having a good filter between the screen and your brain is a good plan. Doesn't really matter what the translation is. Proof is in the product, not the name.
