• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Easiest way is probably to program in all the frequencies you anticipate using.

To put it simply, no it cannot. If you are on 145.490 with a negative shift and dial up to 145.600 in VFO, it will not automatically switch to simplex. You have to go into the menu and turn off the repeater shift before transmitting on 145.600 simplex. It does not have auto repeater shift like the Icoms, Yaesus, and Kenwoods do.

The easiest way is to program, with the software, what you want for duplex and simplex. Example: 145.490 with a negative shift (144.890 transmit) on memory one, 145.600 simplex (145.600 transmit) on memory two, and so on. I hope that helps.

You get what you pay for with the cheap Chinese radios. One reason they are so cheap. One good thing is they all have similar programing. But, I still feel they are just radios like the old flash bulbs. Use until they break and they by a new one.

That's what I figured. Thanks for the reply.

The old flash bulbs only worked once. That was how they were designed. :)

The Chinese radios may not be up to the standard of the Japanese but they are good value for money.

I'd program in some standard simplex channels, but apart from the call channel, what would you program? It seems the channel spacing varies depending on where you go.

Like others have said, the way to go is programming it and then just using the memory function on the Baofeng. I actually have the exact same radio and I think that it is above superb for the price, but it's kind of obvious that the Chinese don't know how to make intuitive radios like the Japanese do. I still haven't been able to figure out how to use the blue function keys on it, but there really isn't any quick way to turn the shift on and off. You'll just need to program it to the frequencies that you'll be using and then give them names on your radio so you know which one is which.

I have a UV-5RA. I printed out some basic instructions and taped them to the back of the battery. Easy reference if/when I need to manually enter a simplex frequency (which is pretty rare). To turn off frequency/repeater shift, press Menu then 25 then Menu. Then use the arrow keys to change between plus, minus, or off (off of course getting you a simplex w/ no shift).
