Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am a new user and had a question about the Baofeng UV-5r. I work in an assisted living facility that has a radio network. 1 main dispatch radio that calls off notices from a Karelink program. And approximately 10 handheld units for the care staff and maintenance staff to communicate. We recently had to replace a couple damaged radios. Will the UV5r connect with these existing radios? I have the frequencies that our radios operate on as well as a TPL frequency. 465.925 with TPL 233.6. I would like to know if the uv5r can connect to that frequency.

Yes it can.

Honestly though, for ease of use and less future problems, I'd recommend the TD-M8 (or equivalent WLN series) radios. They are much less expensive, and can only be programmed from a laptop or desktop computer. They can handle up to 16 channels, but by setting all channels to use the same frequency it means that fumble-fingered folks cannot screw up the settings! :)

This vendor offers two and includes the programming cable. CHIRP may be used to program them. $15/each with Prime available:
https://www.amazon.com/TIDRADIO-TD-...UTF8&qid=1492449533&sr=8-3&keywords=wln+kd-c1

I have four of these and they are a terrific value. They are so small that they will fit in a shirt pocket easily!

Ok thank you for the quick response. Another question i have is the maintenance staff often switch to channel 13 on the motorola cp185 when we have to talk about on going projects and not disturb the nursing staff with unwanted talk. How can i go about finding what frequency is on that channel? Would i need software and plug it into the computer?

I wont be getting the uv5r as a replacement for the damaged ones. The company already bought replacements and it wasnt cheap either, around 150 each radio. I was looking to get the uv5r for myself and father in law. We are the maintenance supervisors for both buildings. Building penetration is a problem here. Some times we wont receive well depending where we are.

And once getting the uv5r i wanted to start learning and listening to the ham frequencies in my area. But 90% of the use would be with the work frequency every day.

I am not certain that the Baofeng radios are approved for use on frequencies other than amateur radio frequencies. Also, these radios should not be used by anyone that is not familiar with how radio spectrum works. Other than CB, MURS, FRS, all use of radio frequencies require a license.

Encouraging proper use of two-way radio spectrum including CB.

the UV5R has a Part 90 FCC certification, so yes it is approved for Business Band/Land Mobile radio.

$150 is actually not bad in the world of two way radios. My work radio retailed for around $3,500 when it was new. The one I'm getting upgraded to goes for around $6,000.

For future reference, you may want to check out Maxon for replacement radios in the future. They had a "trade-in" program going on that got you a portable radio for about $50 a few months ago...it had been going on for several years so it may be still going on. Particular model number was TS-2000.
