• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Also got one of the UV-5R here today.

It is quite a good little radio for the $70, which included shipping.

I got the large 3600mAh battery, which really makes the radio tall and slim, which fits in the hand nicely.

The only criticism so far.....the battery pack internals rattle!
Yes it would seem that they either forgot to glue the cell pack down inside the case or the adhesive has failed. It will no doubt result in a failed pack eventually as the internal wiring breaks.

Has anyone else ordered the large battery and had this problem?

Other than that, the radio is quite a neat little package!

The backlit display is really crisp and clear.

Agree

I've had my UV-5R with the standard battery since 5 June and I am extremely pleased with it. The rx seems extremely sensitive and I open repeaters up to 50 kms. Well done, Baofeng!

No tim you can't, or if you can I can't figure out how. I wanted to program our local noaa repeater in, and every time I scan it stops on it. Can't figure how to lock out the channel either so I ended up deleting it and just memorizing the freq.

I believe there is a column to do a scan lockout in the software called "Scan Add", but it doesn't appear to be programmable from the keyboard.

In the software you can adjust it.
- Using CHIRP you set the far right column to "S" for skip.
- As mentioned, in the Baofeng software "Scan_Add" column you select off/on.

I don't know how/if you can set scanning through the radio directly.

I don't know if anyone is interested, but there is now a new extremely high-capacity 3600 maH lithium battery for the Baofeng UV-5R. It's quite large! But it only costs $26 (no shipping charge). I have a blue UV-5R, so naturally I ordered the blue high-cap battery. Here are the details from my eBay transaction:

Smart Colour Blue Ultra High Capacity 3600mAH 7.4V Battery For Baofeng UV-5R | eBay

Hey, wait a minute, they used MY YouTube video review on their ad! I'm suing for royalties! LOL......

Had a Baofeng UV-3R some time ago and was very disappointed with the constant noise coming from its front end. I received my new Baofeng UV-5R the other day which I purchased at: ehamstore.com/baofeng.html. Amazed that the radio arrived after only 3 days!

Apparently the Chinese had done their homework before producing the UV-5R. What an amazing difference! The front end is very tight even when scanning over 60 of the local fire and ambulance frequencies.

After getting the latest daily build of CHIRP, it's a pleasure to no longer need the ridiculous Baofeng VIP programming software. One of the functions I needed in the VIP software was the ability to enable or disable certain frequencies for scanning. That function is part of CHIRP now!

With the latest build of CHIRP, you can also get the actual firmware release number of the UV-5R. From what I found out, that information is no longer available within the radio itself. There are other functions that the latest build of CHIRP can now do when programming the Baofeng UV-5R.

A big thanks to the developers of CHIRP and the ehamstore for a great price and a fast delivery.

There are Name Memories using the Chirp software

Now all we need is alpha-numeric memories! Can't wait to see this thing evolve further.

Regards,
Mike

Using the CHIRP software there are two tabs on the left, Memories and Settings. Under settings, go to Basic settings. Display Mode (A) and Display Mode (B), choose Name from the drop down. This will select what you named the frequency.

I recently bought my first radio the UV-5R for $25 (£15) a week ago after recently getting in to amateur radio and I'm already ordering a programming cable and a better antenna. I'm really impressed with this little radio it's a well featured starter radio.
