• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

It's out of the range of frequencies the radio can accept, just like the error message said.

Also, entering police frequencies in a transmit-capable radio is a really bad idea--if you transmit on those frequencies, even accidentally, you can get into serious legal trouble. And the UV-5R is an analog-only radio that can't decode the digital P25 signal used by most public safety agencies. It also cannot track the trunked systems most often associated with P25 digital.

Get a scanner, and you'll be able to hear the digital signals and there is no possibility of accidentally transmitting and getting into trouble.

Usually the agency will give you a radio if you are an employee. Have you inquired about that?

I have. Buh our department as emergency management is low funded and only have a single radio for duty use. I had asked a supervisor about getting a scanner myself. Just to simply monitor the police traffic since i am on call 24/7 but i might just use my baofeng for recreational use at airsoft events. And purchase a scanner another time.

A scanner is probably your best bet. If you indicate your agency, we could advise you regarding which model you would need to hear anything.

I see two frequencies listed for Calumet City ESDA:
856.21250 and 155.055
You're going to need a 325P2, 436HP, or SDS100 to be able to scan the 800MHz frequency. If you want to receive the Starcom trunked system, the SDS100 is your best bet, because Cook County uses simulcast, which the other units have difficulty receiving. But it is the most expensive--$650 new.

Yea. We operate our shift with police and if we get called for an emergecy operation we will use the 155.055 to communicate with our co workers. But generally is there anything on amazon?

All three of the scanners I mentioned are available on Amazon. Any radio that can transmit on 800MHz is going to cost even more, especially if you want dual-band 800MHz + VHF.

If transmitting is a requirement, you may be able to find a used Motorola for slightly less than a scanner, but programming software can cost more than the radio, and the complexities of programming them have many pitfalls. Before considering that route, find someone who knows what they are doing and has access to the programming software. Maybe post in the Motorola forum noting your agency and frequencies needed.

So enter the 155.055Mhz in your baofeng if you have permission to transmit, your should be fine. If not set for receive only. That will do both on that VHF frequency.
Scan On!
