• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just spent the big bucks and got a UV17R-Plus. Trying to program some aircraft frequencies into it using Chirp (first experience). Chirp does not have the UV17R-Plus as a programmable model, only the Pro version. It will not allow me to to enter air band frequencies. Any input on how to fix this on the cheapest radio that I ever purchased.....

Thanks for any help.

I have the 17r+ but have not used for air. You might want to manually program an air freq, upload to chirp and see what happens. I used the 17pro.

I can enter a freq for the local airport manually into the VFO, and hear aircraft, but I've not been able to program any of the aircraft frequencies and save them to scan.
I used the most current version of Chirp, I've used the Baofeng software, and have tried to do it manually from the keypad.
No Joy here.
I'm searching various forums online to try to find an answer. If anyone with the UV-17 R Plus has accomplished, Id appreciate the Intel.

I'll download the latest version later today, and try again. If not, I'll try the 5RM.
I appreciate the help
I'll also come back with my results for others to see/use.

For receive, quite good, have not tried transmit yet Somewhat long squelch tail. Not sure about junk design since I think it is quite an attractive and sensitive radio. For the price a very nice radio and it has acceptable air band receive! I know, it is Chinese, and I would much prefer to buy USA, but I could not find one made here.😟👿

I tried one and the one thing I can say is the one I tried had surprisingly CLEAR transmit audio that wasn't muffled and mumbly low like many of these CCRs often suffer from. Otherwise, same piss poor RX performance easily overloaded. But it does have a jazzy color display and all important flashlight!

Love the flashlight! 🔦Actually could not care less🥱but I find the receiver excellent, but I live in a fairly low rf environment so no overload here, but obviously could be a big factor in a busy metro area.

So it 'works great' then?

I just used Chirp to program ~50 repeaters into my UV-17R Plus on an HP Windows 11 machine. Smooth as silk. Changed to channel mode and scanned away. I put 'em starting at channel 101 to keep lower numbers free for other use. I downloaded current config from radio following Chirp instructions, saved a backup copy, then downloaded to csv file from Repeaterbook, then copied and pasted in Chirp. Uploaded and no problems. Only wrinkle was choosing the Port in Chirp, but it suggested a Com port to use, so I tried it and no problems... Good Luck!

Ditto
I had to get the radio, then connect and upload to Chirp.
That way Chirp had the UV-17R Plus file.
Then smooth sailing from there.

I had previous issues, trying to program it.
WITHOUT connecting to Chirp first.

Connect your radio to Chirp first.
Then program it.
