I learned of this news from someone who's a close family friend who was affected by the incident.

Did anyone actually monitor this event as it was unfolding?

There aren't many users here that live up in that corner, so I doubt it. I checked with a couple contacts up there, but they don't know much more than was already released.

I was listening to most of this event, although it has been almost 5 months so I don't remember every detail.

The article describes pretty much what happened. It did take a while for the police to make sure the area was secure and emergancy rescue people in place. Of course they didn't know that he had already shot himself, and whether he was waiting for someone to walk in and maybe shoot at them, so all the precautions were warranted.

It was quite interesting to hear it all happen. If I wouldn't have been 35 miles away, I would have driven over with my portable scanner and tried to get a closer look.

It breaks my heart just thinking about it,even now. I communicate with a family member affected almost daily.

I didn't know any of those involved, but this is something that doesn't happen all that often in our area, so it is an event that stays with you. I do feel for the family and friends and hope they all find a way to work thru it.
