I have 2 questions :
1.) We built a ranch house, or in some places it is called a rambler in the middle of a wooded area. If I was to put up a Base antenna. Does it have to be above the tree line to be of any use or will it work just being on the roof ? If it was to be above the tree line, the tower would look so tall and out of place. In our area there is very little departments using the 800 frequencies yet if that is of any concern .

2.) With having a Base Antenna would you use RG-58 as the coax ? I am thinking the length of coax would at least 50 ft.

1. The trees will attenuate some signals during the summertime; the more you get it away from the trees the better. It may not necessarily mean higher - a different location on the roof might be the answer. You may need to do a little work on the roof with a handheld to see where you get the best coverage

2. Never use RG58 - for 50 foot, a good RG6 will do, or even a 9913 cable.

best regards..Mike

Depends on what you listen to. Foliage attenuation is frequency dependent. At 800 MHz trees are a sponge, but on VHF lo it's hardly a factor. The best thing is to get the antenna outside and in the clear, then see how it does.

By all means stay away from RG-58 if the run is 50 feet. Beef it up some and you will be much happier.
