• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have two Cb radios (one in my car and another I am hoping to use as a base radio). I was wondering what is the best base station antenna to use. I would like to be able to put it in my attic, but I have a metal roof and I am affraid that would make the antenna not work so well. If you have any suggestions for a good base antenna or a way to get it to work in the attic or somewhere else I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

This is a tough one. Any antenna in the attic is going to see much lower performance because of the metal roof. You didn't exactly say, but can you put an antenna outside at your location? I'm not sure if you have neighborhood association restrictions preventing you from doing it or not.

If you can mount an antenna outside then I would suggest an Antron 99 or an Imax 2000. Both antennas are very widely used in CB and I myself run an Antron 99 with great results. Both are fairly large antennas so if you have a neighborhood association they will notice it. If you need a more discreet outdoor antennna you could always use a dipole strung up between a few trees. With your metal roof you could even use a magnet mount mobile antenna stuck to the roof itself.

I just need a little more info before I can really tell you what I would use.

You're right, no antenna will work well under a metal roof. I think I would find a spot not too obtrusive and mount the thing outside. Now if you could mount an antenna on -top- of that metal roof, that's a different story altogether! Ought'a work well there.
