Is there any chance of a base model version of the new 396t on the way?

Not within the next 6 months anyway. Uniden doesn't announce new products more than 6 months in advance.

Surely Uniden is going to get back to the base/mobile scanners after having 4 new portables in the lineup.

I wrote Upman (the Uniden engineer who posts here) and he advised as mentioned above.
Uniden simply does not announce anything until 6-months prior to production.
I agree with the premise regarding the 396. I've got to believe a new generation base/mobile would be out in 12-18 months. All those 780 and 785 (like mine) are going to be useless for Motorola trunking with the rebanding soon to occur.
A base/mobile version of the 396 is what I'm going to try and hold out for. Especially since the 396 handles 700-Mhz.

Being new to these next-generation scanner marvels, and being somewhat a fan of handhelds, what would a mobile version of the 396 (or any scanner for that matter) offer that the handeheld doesn't (assuming same or similar firmware, specs, etc... there's always going to be enhancements). Can things like the actual receiver, etc, be better in a mobile? Or are we just talking about packaging and form-factor?

Hopefully NOT a SMA antenna - they tend to work loose on mobile installations since there is nothing to keep the nut from turning (or the entire connector for that matter).

mobile vs handheld
Ditto.
I have 3 scanners: 780, 785, 250. I love'em all.
I travel a sales territory (40-k miles/yr) so I spend a lot of time in my car.
I have traveled with a Uniden handheld (pre-trunking) and enjoyed it thoroughly.
But a 780/785 connected to an amplified GE speaker "is the bomb"!
Larger display too.
I use my 250 in the car if I am trying to keep up with two things at once. Maybe a fireground on my handheld while the other stuff runs on my mobile. And of course when a power failure hits my area it's time to use the 250.
The 396 looks like a GREAT radio. Once I get a "rebanded-800" mobile, then my next handheld would be a 396 for sure. :wink:
