Why is it that my BCT-15 gets better reception than my BCD396T using the same antenna from my office?

That, and if you are using a base antenna such as a discone, the correct selection of coax to minimize losses. Don't go to a preamp unless you absolutely have to (for example, if you are interested in milair or satellite stuff). Improve the coax and antenna first.

And of course make sure you don't inadvertantly activate the attenuator (been there, done that) :.>>

Didn't help...

How does one assist a $600 radio in becoming "less deaf"? Will a simple antenna upgrade make a noticeable difference? I listen to 800MHz trunked and 400-500MHz local police.
A new outside antenna didn't help my RAT Shack PRO2096 any. My Uniden hooked to the (same) new antenna will RX from all of the counties surrounding where I am.

On the same new antenna, my 2096 can't hear VHF Hi, VHF Lo to any extent and is only a little better on UHF.

antenna to match what you listen to.

for example my 246 wont ever pick up my cordless phone
996 and 15 are on a rat-800 antennas and will pick it up every time.

I have a stock magnet mount antenna I bought from radio shack some years ago and use it with my Pro 2096 sitting on a window still(the antenna),that picks up all kinds of stuff where my handheld(Uniden 296D) even with the antenna attached breaks out in a deep sweat trying to pick up stuff-gets my states p25 traffic but doesn't grab id's even when it hits a control channel. My 2096 picks 3 counties over and way beyond sometimes.

GRE radios, of which the 2096 is one, is well documented as being prone to desense in the hi band due to defects in the front end filtering. You didn't say what kind of antenna you are running, but if you're running a discone, it's also true that some aren't all that great at VHF lo band.

If you have strong FM stations in your area, a FM trap might solve at least some of this.

A better comparison would be a BCT15 vs a 996T

A handheld will almost never get the same sensitivity as its same company base/mobile
maybe size, maybe better grounding etc etc

With the 396, putting the input frequencies to a MOT II system as conventional frequencies with its own quick key assigned, together with an alert tone, has had some near distance functionality over the "close call" feature. Of course, you have to figure out what you are listening to, and distance is tough to judge.
