Howdy its been a while since ive been into scanning but I'd just like a plug and play unit that I can tune into when im out working in the barn. Ive been reading up on the Uniden HP-1 and HP-2 and im wondering if the HP-1 will be just fine basic listening? I'd rather not fork out another $100 for the HP-2 if I can help it. Or is there even a better radio for plug and play users??

Like everything else it's all about location. The HP1 cannot do P25 phase 2 while the HP2 and other can. Glancing at the databases here I don't see anything in your immediate area that uses Phase 2 so the HP1 may be fine for now. However nothing prevents MI from selecting a new Phase 2 system tomorrow leaving you left out when they move of an older system. That being said there is no guarantee they will do that. Perhaps your area will never go that route. I'm sure someone more familiar with MI will chime in here and might provide some more useful info.

As far as usability the HP1 and 2 work the same and are hard to beat as far as "plug and play".

Thanks, kc2kth! Just by some quick reading I did it sounds like phase 2, at least in my area is aways off. The more I look into it, I think the HP-1 could be the best choice for my setup.
