I have a GRE PSR-800 that Whistler just converted to WS-1080.
OK, so I really have a WS-1080 now.

I have noticed that when the scanner is in use and is connected to an external power supply
that after awhile the battery compartment begins to get somewhat warm. This to me indicates
the batteries are being charged.

On the PSR-800 the batteries were ONLY charged if the scanner was OFF while connected
to an external power source. If the scanner was ON the batteries were not charged while the
scanner was in use.

Does that rule apply to the WS-1080 as well? When do the batteries get charged on the
WS-1080 when it is connected to external power? External power can mean the USB port
of the pc or a power supply with the proper ratings that plugs into the wall.

Yes. I use ONLY rechargeables and so the battery switch is always set to NiMh.
And I just checked again to make sure.

But my question was WHEN do the batteries get charged?
When the scanner is turned ON or when it is turned OFF?

Well, my PSR-800 always charged ( on or off ) when it was just itself. It gets hot normally when charging but should be still ok to touch, not supposed to burn. if not that hot you are ok!
