I wonder if a cells plastic wrap insulation was compromised on one of the cells. This would expose the negative side, which is the entire cells outer cylinder under its skin. If it were a middle cell in the compartment, a short from the cells exposed metal cylinder to the SD card holder, which I'd imagine is grounded, would create at least one cells full potential to short directly to ground and overheat would be the result. Depending on where such a short occurred, it could be the current and voltage from two cells now dissipating their energy through the short.

Metal on the battery cover would also create a short in two or more cells have compromised plastic skins protecting their negative metal cylinders that run the length of each cell. You know, the metal (often foil tape or just foil or copper conductive tape) people were using to try and eliminate the UHF sensitivity problem in the 436.
This would definitely a create a short if the cells have exposed skins down to bare metal on any cells.

So lesson here is dont put batteries that look like the above in your scanner.
Also, pay attention when you put your batteries in your scanner.

Sorry your scanner melted :(

As long as it's just cosmetic damage, you can save money and repair it yourself.
