I've had my 296 since December 2004. So far I really like it, but I want to obtain an additional battery. I've seen the article about using 4 AAA to replace the uniden pack, but I wanted to hear what others had to say about other aftermarket battery packs out there.
I hate to start listening to a good call when my battery indicator starts beeping. I guess you can't use a 296 with an AC adapter to power it can you? I was spoiled by my first scanner, a RS Pro-34 that had both a charge jack and AC power jack on the side. My standard procedure was when inside, plug in the AC cord. Now I'll need a few spare packs to keep charged.

The 296 AC also acts as the charger. You will notice that the scanner will get warm if you are using it and charging at the same time. If you battery is charged you can always disconnect it (inside the back cover) and still listen with the AC adapter.

I usually leave it just pluged in and disconnect the AC only when I am going moblie.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jim. I appreciate the insight. I don't recall reading that in the owners manual, but then again I didn't read every page and I have heard of other items that are not mentioned as well.
