Hey Guys,
Wanted to drop you all a note on this. I've been getting kind of tired of my battery dying in my 296d. As you all know because of the way the radio is set up, you either have to buy a pack directly from Uniden or an aftermarket pack. Either way you still wind up charging the batteries in the unit. Here's the deal. Went to the local "Rat Shack" and picked up a 4 cell AAA holder. Which by the way fit perfectly in the radio. Found an old cordless phone battery and cut off the plug. Soldered the plug to the pack and shrink wrapped the wires. I also bought 8 AAA Energizer rechargables (4 pk and 4pk with the charger). Whole thing took less than 15 minutes to put together and works great. I'm getting over 5 hours or battery life with the light on. The other plus is that I can put the other 4 AAA's in the charger and I always have fresh batteries. The other plus is you can not only charge the batteries in the charger, but you can charge the pack in the radio also. In addition to that, the pack doesn't look bad at all in the radio either. It actually looks like it belongs there. Costs: about $20.00 and thats for 2 pks of batteries, the charger and the holder. Overall, I thought it was a good deal.
