Hey Guys,
Wanted to drop you all a note on this. I've been getting kind of tired of my battery dying in my 296d. As you all know because of the way the radio is set up, you either have to buy a pack directly from Uniden or an aftermarket pack. Either way you still wind up charging the batteries in the unit. Here's the deal. Went to the local "Rat Shack" and picked up a 4 cell AAA holder. Which by the way fit perfectly in the radio. Found an old cordless phone battery and cut off the plug. Soldered the plug to the pack and shrink wrapped the wires. I also bought 8 AAA Energizer rechargables (4 pk and 4pk with the charger). Whole thing took less than 15 minutes to put together and works great. I'm getting over 5 hours or battery life with the light on. The other plus is that I can put the other 4 AAA's in the charger and I always have fresh batteries. The other plus is you can not only charge the batteries in the charger, but you can charge the pack in the radio also. In addition to that, the pack doesn't look bad at all in the radio either. It actually looks like it belongs there. Costs: about $20.00 and thats for 2 pks of batteries, the charger and the holder. Overall, I thought it was a good deal.

iv been experimenting with this since i last posted , it is a great idea , however i dont get near 5 hours of power with my light off on the 250-D with the light off i get the following. see below ! have done no experimenting with light on yet , but i dont believe you can get 5 hours with the light on. unless becouse of a different set up in the 296.

1.radio shack NMH rechargables 750 mah 3 hours / low battery indicator comes on and lasts about another 20 minutes then dies.

2.rayovac NMH rechargables 750 mah 3 to 4 hours (did get 4 hours one time after recharging in radio not the radio shack charger)

3.Energizer NMH rechargables 850 mah 4 hours 10 mins approxamatly.

what i have decided to do , is carry all 3 battery packs with me in my lunch box at work , becouse at least that way i know i have fresh charged batteries , and can get at least 9-10 hours of listening / although i might have to change packs 2 times. not that big of a deal , takes 30-45 seconds if that. it might bother some people , but it beats my original pack dying in about 4 hours and no way to charge the original pack the radio came with while im working. so i still think its a good idea. also as far as the packs go , i didnt solder the wires together , i stripped them and twisted them together , then electrical taped them .
