Is it possible for a correctional facility to use BB radios? I was at Subway the other day and saw two CO's walk in. (on lunch I'm assuming) being me I had to glance at their radios and they were business band. VX1100 They had "1" displayed on the screen, and the antenna looked like VHF. Usually VHF tends to be longer than UHF, but anyways so I got the courage to ask them to key their mics and I got a freq of 158.4075, from what I know that's not a BB Freq. and a pl of 173.8. I asked them and they said that is what they use for everyday traffic. Do you think they're on repeater with them, or are they just poor? :?

There are only 12 liscenses that show up in a search of the ULS for that frequencyand they mostly seem to be itenerant moblie business liscenses.

It would help to know where and who.

in answer to your first question, yes. Ever hear of Wackenhut, CCA (that would be correctional corporation of america), or any of the other private/for profit prison operators? They would hold a business liscense and not a local goverment/public safety liscense.

Considering what happened in London recently, maybe you would want to adise the local police of your experience. Possibly they were not who they appeared to be.

Hi all,

"Considering what happened in London recently, maybe you would want to adise the local police of your experience. Possibly they were not who they appeared to be."

Stop and think a moment, do you REALLY want to increase your local PD's paranoia and send them off tilting at windmills? It can blow back in your face and cause them to be even more anti-scanner than they already are. Knowing cops as I do it's best not to "start something" and have to put up with becoming a target of legal harassment. Please, let sleeping dogs lie.

The answer to all questions could have been had with just one question, "That's an odd frequency for the Department of Corrections, who's your employer?". After all, terrorists won't kidnap you in a public place, they want to remain on the QT rather than drawing attention to themselves. (;->)
