Hello-

We have had this scanner for a while but never programmed the it for trunk tracking.
I have been messing with it a bit but have a few questions:

1. Is model still good, or has it been obsoleteed by new technologies?

2. programming, I am trying to program manually (no PC cable). I read the manual.
I enter in all the frequencies for a local tower, with the system type ED.
I try and enter talk group numbers (following instruction manual) .
the number format is ##-###.
I keep getting an ERROR .
Is there a trick to doing this?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

Welcome to RR ,burtondogs :)

Nope , the 245 is not obsolete ,if you monitor analog comms.

Are you entering the talkgroups in AFS (00-000) or in DEC ( 0000) format ?

Have you made sure the system LCN is at the beginning of your selected bank ?
Bank 1 would be 001, Bank 2 would have to start at 031 ... etc

Once you think you have the frequencies programmed properly, try searching for talkgroups rather than scanning by pressing SRCH. This will eliminate any problems you may be having with the programming of the talkgroups and may help identifying the error. If all is well during a search, proceed with the talkgroup entries.

Also, what system (location & agency) are you programming?

Another thing folks often forget - programming either Moto or EDACS system - that the easiest way to insure you are trunking correctly is to let the scanner go into ID Search mode after programming. Look at the talkgroups that result - and remember to press the SVC key while trunking for 2 seconds to change from DEC to AFS format. Then while trunking, press MAN or HOLD (I think both keys do the same thing in trunking mode), and the display will blank out. It is now ready for talkgroup programming. If memory serves, entering AFS talkgroups requires you to seperate the fleet/subfleet with a decimal point (there aren't too many EDACS systems in central Md, so I'm doing this more or less from memory...) - so AFS 01-002 would be entered '01.002' 73s Mike

Hey thanks for the help.....

The talk group codes are listed in AFS , but I tried entering both ways.
I have the system set to ED, these 12 numbers loaded into bank 1, I shut off all other banks, press search (while scanning), It does not seem to pick up any groups. ??

I am trying to program this system :

System: New York Communications Company
County: Dutchess
Type: G.E. Ericsson
Use: Poughkeepsie Police, Fire, Works, Hyde Park Police, Dutchess County
Drug Task Force, Dutchess County Sheriff's Department, New Paltz
Police Department, Ulster County 911 Dispatch, Poughkeepsie Journal
and various businesses

Frequencies:
Logical Channel Numbering:
854.4125 (1) 853.2625 (2) 852.6875 (3) 856.7125 (4) 860.7125 (5)
861.2375 (6) 862.2375 (7) 863.2375 (8) 864.2375 (9) 865.2375 (10)
855.3125 (11) 859.8875 (12)

Thanks again

Jim I'm not quite sure where you got this info, but the RRDB has quite a different LCN order for the Highland system, which may be your problem. Check here....

http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=841

There are definite 'holes' (for lack of a better word) in the LCN layout - this may be normal, it may not. A couple of questions on the NY forum would be in order. 73s Mike

Make sure you are entering the freqs in while in trunking mode,
As was mentioned earlier, make sure they are in the right order for EDACs.
In order not to frustrate yourself, when you think you're good-to-go put it in Search mode. You should see not see the freq's in the display, if you are not receiving this way something else is wrong.

Especially with EDACs where freq order is critical I've seen numerous listings on diff sites for the same jurisdiction. Seems like the ones here at RR.com are correct for me. I'm sure for you also as the folks working this site are sticklers for accuracy and that is much appreciated.
