I am just getting back into the scanning hobby after being away for quote a while. My last, and at this moment current, scanner is a Uniden BC760XLT.

While amazing how things change over the years, I find that I need to upgrade to a digital scanner to listen to what I wish. While I could live with a desktop model, I would prefer to have the portable to take with me while I travel. My dealer has told me that audio from the portable is not that loud, and as such he would suggest the desktop.

Any comments to guide me in the right direction, would be much appreciated.

No worries about the audio. If you are listneing to digital transmissions you will notice hoe loud it is. Some of the old analog trunking is low, check out the ScanOnt group for almost daily dissertations on the subject.

If you want to be portable then get a 296. I have one.

Some people swear by their RS Pro 96, perhaps some of them can comment on the audio as compared to Uniden models.

I can't comment on the 296 or the 796 as far as performance is concerned, however, I can say this much. I use a BC250D portable (no need for 9600 bps so far). At home, no sweat listening to the scanner. On the road, I use a Radio Shack amplified speaker in the car. Audio is loud enough for me to keep the windows open and still hear radio transmissions. The best part of a portable is that it can go with you no matter where you go. Try that with a mobile scanner.

Does it have to be Uniden ? I understand that sometimes people are
brand loyal

But,Radioshack will be releasing a base/mobile Pro-2096 suppossedly in
August,2004.

If you can wait,then you can replace your mobile and not feel that you
have to buy a portable if that is not exactly what you want.

There is a "sticky" posted in the Radioreference forum that you may want
to read concerning the Pro-2096.

It certainly does not have to be a Uniden.

The new RS may be worth waiting for, thank you for this.

my suggestion is to get a pro 96 instead of a uniden.
