I have both the 785d and the 996xt scanners.I have been able to get the 996 running somewhat thru the usb cable connection to the scanner front in free scan. The 785d I have not. Sometime ago I purchased the usb to serial cable and disc thru radio shack #20-047 but was unable to get it running at the time. I am now trying again, and at the time,I installed the software that came with the cable. I also left a shortcut to this software on my desktop. When trying again to get the 785 to communicate with the pc it asks for the disc which I cannot locate. I tried to unzip this file but it doesn't seem to work. Any help?

You didn't say which USB device you were using with the 996 - but if you are using the USB-1 from Uniden, I don't think it's certified to work with the 785. Neither is FreeScan - it's not built to handle the non-DMA scanners. And I would have my doubts about the GRE/RS one working with either radio.

Which one are you using that was, at least partially, working? 73 Mike

20-047 is for RS scanners. I don't think there is a practical way to make it work with the 785...how did you even connect it (that cable is a mini plug and the scanner has a DB9)?

The 996xt seems to be working with free scan using the bc1 cable. I am trying to use a radio shack usb to serial cable 20-047 with the 785d but need the software to connect it to any type software available.

20-047 will not work. It's made by GRE for GRE made radios.

You need a USB-Serial 9 pin cable. I purchased a Prolific from Radio Shack a few years ago which works.

I got it working after finding the drivers on my pc that I had installed previously. I used a 9 pin serial to usb cable that came with the 20-047 kit from radio shack.

I'm curious - how did you get that to work with an Uniden scanner? If I recall, the other end of the USB cable is a 1/8 inch phono type jack, while the Uniden needs, I think, a DB9

I used a cable that has a serial connecter for this scanner on one end and a usb at the other. Software is the radio shack 20-047.
