BC246T Serial Connection Without Cable

In an attempt to connect a BC246T without buying the $30 cable I tried soldering directly to the board where the connector attaches. The result: one of the solder pads is toast.

Looking under the bottom right of the LCD there are what look like 4 test points: TXD, RTS, RXD and GND.

Is it safe to assume that I can connect to those? Has anyone tried this?

you could just buy a usb to serial cable (trendnet) i use them on my uniden 346t

Right... but I don't have the cable that plugs into the scanner. I'm trying to get by without buying that cable.

$30 cable? You can buy the serial cable from Uniden for $14.99 (you may be able to find them even cheaper from other retailers).

The connector on my scanner no longer exists either, that's part of the reason I need to solder directly to the board.
