I am unable to charge the battery or run the scanner from the AC adapter. The Scanner is brand new (purchased December 04). Any ideas?

hi

You need to get another charger for it ,It might of been bad charger,if that does not work try taking to a dealer or call someone.
Or try this take the battery out and try to use the plug then if the radio does not go on you will know if the charger is good or not...

BC250D Charging Problem

I tried removing the battery and trying 2 different 12V adapters. Still no luck. Could the battery be bad?

If you took the battery out of it, tried 2 power supplies and the radio would not turn on then I would have to say that there is a problem in the radio.

If the power supply you are using tests ok, and that the jack on the side of the radio isn't broken, it is likely something more serious. I have repaired a 250d with the exact symptoms. It is difficult to diagnose problems like this without the radio in hand, however have you ever accidentally somehow connected the battery backwards? Doing so will result in the exact problem that you are describing. When the battery is connected backwards, a zener diode in the charging circuit will fail. The radio will still power using the battery pack, but will not run off of the power supply, and the batteries must be charged externally.

If you are capable of some simple component level troubleshooting, I have attached a picture showing the location of the diode. Keep in mind that these are surface mount components, and can be difficult to repair if you've never done this type of work before. In the attached photo, the white powder next to "LND4" is the diode to look for.

There could be other problems as well, but this is just what I have seen in the past. So I'm passing it along.

Good luck

I connected the battery when I first bought the radio and it has worked fine, until I turned it on yesterday and I noticed that the battery light came on and the radio shut off even with the AC adapter plugged in.
I am going to have a tech friend of mine take a look at it over the weekend. Thanks for the help.

Do you have another wall wart you can try? The one that came with my 250D is dead and when you hook it up that's exactly what happens. Try that first before you send it back.

If it were purchased new in Dec 04 it should be under warranty. You have done anything that they would recommend to you. They will most likely refer that you mail it in for repair.
