• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I used to have a 40 foot tower just for scanning. I couldn't hear beyond about 25-30 miles, tops. This wasn't using a Bearcat BC-250D scanner, but that shouldn't matter. 800 MHz systems aren't designed to transmit great distances without multiple tower sites. I would say 36 miles is great. Now, for VHF low band, I could hear around 90 miles, sometimes, not counting skip. YMMV.

A lot of factors go into this. I have several 800 MHz trunking systems in Dutchess County, and two systems in Connecticut. The Fairfield North system in Connecticut is marginal to say the least, with a discone 20' up an RG6. Litchfield South system is half scale, but reliable. NYCOMCO Millbrook is the only Dutchess EDACS site I can access...Beacon, no good, even though it is only twenty miles away.
What systems are you looking for from Newark?

i havent REALLY look around for trunked freq. cause theres so much to listen to in conventional here. alot of PD depts around me are not trunked

i just wanted to hear about bc250d...i always see posts on the pro-95....i clearly feel the bearcat is a better product...i returned my pro-95 week after getting it. bearcat feels even better...the case...screen...ect.

BC250D and Distance

I use a 250D connected to a Maxrad 850 MHz yagi antenna through low-loss LMR-400 cable and I receive the Washington, DC Fire Department system crystal clear at 40+ miles away.

I'm here a lot
A yagi mounted to a rotator to aim directly at the site you choose to monitor.

Won't an amplifier magnify the inter-mod in your area?

I've had my bc250d for several months, got mine as soon as the scanner went on the market. I live in Fort Erie Ontario Canada, about 20 miles from Niagara Falls Ontario.
I get out around 20-30 miles give or take
,Really like the scanner and the digital, lot of digital frequencies in this area. I find it a little big to strap on your hip but it's understanding having the digital card and all the other things, I just ordered a Icom r5 today, so I can use it to take out with me it's a very small scanner compared to the bc250d no digital but at least it's small.
