This may be old news for the more seasoned scanner ops here but I dont ever remember seeing this idea mentioned anywhere. The 296D being a handheld scanner goes with me when I travel. Wanting to scan SAFE-T with all those sites coming on line was becoming a logistical and operational nightmare.

Then it hit me, use control channel scan (plan2) and enter the control channels of the sites that I want to monitor along the way. Everything is in one bank, the scanner will do the work for me locking onto the strongest CC (with a little help from the squelch control) that it hears and when it looses one it will scan till it locks onto another.

I'm sure others have used this but like I said I dont recall ever reading about it.

I've tried the same only entering all frequencies for the Northern regions. The only thing is the 796d is so sensitive it wants to stay locked onto the CC way past readability for digital signals. Also, for some reason if I take it out of trunk mode and lock out a CC the 796 goes back to it whether it's locked out or not. Anyone have any other suggestions. I've even tried cranking the squelch all the way closed. I haven't played around as much as I'd liked to, is there a CC only option for the 796 where I can program the CC's only and not the other freqs?

Yes that is what i'm talking about. You only enter the control channels and select plan 2. All the currently licensed SAFE-T sites use plan 2 .

I looked up the information on control channel scanning in the BC296D Owners Manual and I have a question. Shouldn't you be using Control Channel Scan (Plan 2) instead of (Plan 4)?

I ask because SAFE-T has frequencies higher than 866 MHz (some in 868 MHz range) and in the manual Plan 2 says "Use if the highest frequency used by the system is above 866 MHz and the last three digits end in ..."

The manual states plan 4 should be used "...if the highest frequency in the system is below 866 MHz..."

Just wondering? :?

Yes you are absolutley correct, my mistake. Plan 2 is the correct choice for the SAFE-T system.
