BC296D Backlight Modification?

Anyone know of a modification to make the backlight come on when squelch is broken, similar to the way the BC245XLT works?

Not tested, BUT... find a COS point that goes high or low on squelch, connect a PNP or NPN transistor to that point, the backlight, and either the voltage source for it or ground - whichever is applicable - and that's it.

why not just leave it ALWAYS ON, using the "low" setting (which is barely visible to begin with)

battery drain is minimal.
