Hi,

I am trying to add a Tag to a frequency that is already programmed into my 296D. The manual says:
Page 41 under "3. Assigning a Text Tag"
a. Use the scroll bar to select the channel you want to tag,
then press E.
b. Use the scroll bar to select the letter, then press RSM to
move the entry position one space to the right or press
HOLD/MAN to move the entry position one space to the
left.
c. When you have entered the tag, press E to save the tag.

....so I press Hold/Man, then use the scroll wheel to select channel 2, which is already set to 151.0550.
I then press the "E" (enter) key, but then the display shows me:
1:CTCSS
2;DCS
3:OFF
.....it does NOT let me use the scroll wheel to enter text for a tag. Anyone know why?

Apple clearly didn't design the user interface on this thing. Probably another reason I never used this scanner much....bad enough I have to have the PDF version of the manual open on my computer screen to try and do anything with it, but when you do what the manual says and it doesn't work....eeeee....I paid a lot of money for this scanner when it was new....

Thanks,
Jeff

Page 79 shows the menu tree.
Start here: Press "Menu". Scroll to "Scan Options" Press "E" Scroll to "Conventional" Press "E" Scroll to the channel you want. Press "E" Scroll to "Frequency" Press "E", Press "E" (again) You should now be at Alpha tag

I think I got that right At any rate, start at "Menu" and tunnel down following the tree on page 79.

Think I figured this out....it appears you have to go thru the whole process from step 1 of programming a channel. You cannot enter at step 3 just to set the alpha tag....well, that only took me a couple hours to figure out hehehe

One other thing, the 296D manual does not appear to have any sample shots of the LCD to explain what certain symbols mean. On the display for one of the channels I entered there is a "P" (on a black background). Anyone know what that means?

Thanks,
Jeff

I think that is "Priority". It defaults to the first channel in every bank if you don't change it to anything else. It has to have at least one for each bank regardless of whether you activate it or not.
