If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Ok, how do I get the search feature to work with a regular LTR system?
I have eight frequencies in trunked mode L in the correct LCN's.
All I am able to do is scan. Scan shows saved or new talkgroups, but I was thinking it should be in a search mode.

Any ideas?

this is a pain with the Uniden 250/296.

you will either have to 1) wait until an LTR id comes up and then either press SEARCH or SCAN or 2) program a motorola or edacs system in another bank and jump over to it to MAKE SURE you are really in SEARCH mode on the LTR bank

the second suggestion comes from not knowing whethere you are in SEARCH or SCAN mode with the 296 while tracking an LTR bank - there appears to be no other way to tell!

I can see that my Motorola system is in Id search mode, but when I press search in the LTR bank it starts searching in my saved search (limit) even if I select channel or search rotory mode. It acts like I am in conventional mode, but the channels say L and it is in trunked mode. Did I miss something during programming? I do see LTR talkgroups.

that's what i mean - you must WAIT until an LTR id comes up and is active (hear them talking on it) before you can press search or scan.

like i said, it can be a pain when you're in a hurry...

when you say "I can see LTR talkgroups" i think you're seeing the ones through the "Activity ID" feature of the 296 - it will show other active ID's that you may not be monitoring at the moment or are locked out.

i think there is one other way to get in the LTR scan lists - you have to use the MENU button, and navigate a bit, but it will only show you ID's that you can lock out and (i think) let you select a scan list to watch in SCAN mode...

but to actually SEARCH or SCAN and have it understood as an LTR command by the 296, you have to wait until an ID becomes active.

Ok, I'll wait for an active talkgroup and try it. I'll also try turning of the activity Id.

So much more frendly with the PRO-92. Too bad GRE dropped LTR in the newer models. Just another good reason to keep the PRO-92 around.

i agree (about the PRO-92).

however, realize that LTR Regular radio systems are slowly migrating to LTR Passport and related (NET/Multi-NET) since they offer more features...

even a PRO-92"a" can't tune that...

i am of the opinion that Uniden and GRE need to take another look at LTR protocols for their next scanners...

If you can see that is it in ID Search Mode on a Motorola or EDACS system it is in search mode on the LTR since ID Search and ID Scan are universal across all banks.
