What is going to be the differrence between these two. Important is having the backlight come on when receiving voice. Is there more lines of info for one unit vs another?

It's not so much as "what is going to be the difference between these two" - the 296 has been discontinued and replaced by the 396. With vast improvements.

You can have the backlight activate when it picks up a channel with the 396.
