I just decided to get a scanner. After seeing what a strong community there is on this forum I am more encouraged then ever.

I am totally new with only a very basic knowledge of scanners. I have learned what kind of scanner to get for my area. I am looking at the Uniden BC346XT and the PRO 164 from Radio Shack.

Can anyone give me some advice to help break the tie?

Thanks for the help and I look forward to joining you all for more!

Fortunately, GA
Here is the tie breaker. Your county, El Paso, has joined the digital age. They have migrated to the Colorado state P-25 system. You will need a digital, P-25 scanner to hear the dispatches for FD and PD in your county. Minimum requirements are a Pro-96, BCD396T. Best choice: Pro-106, BCD396XT. You have a ton of digital stuff to monitor in your area. I traded a digital scanner (Pro-96) last summer to someone who works at the ski resort. He ended up up selling it, and upgrading to a newer scanner. Sorry I made the tie breaker a little more expensive:)
Since you are a premium subscriber, look into getting Win500 for GRE scanners, or, FreeScan for Unidens.

Thank you for the kind and informative reply. I will definitely be able to use that information when we finally return home to Colorado Springs.

At present I travel for living as an itinerant evangelist, we very seldom get to go home to Colorado, our base.

We spend the grand majority of our time in California; the Fresno and LA County area. We also trek up the Coast into Washington periodically.

After researching these areas I thought I'd be better getting an analog trunking unit to cover most of areas I am in.

So I still would like to break the tie between the PRO 164 and the BC346XT.

Thanks!
