turn it on
put in the noaa weather for a constant sound (or trip the squelch)
and try putting the plug in repeatedly to see if the jack makes better contact.
if you hear anything at all it is not the speaker.
if it is the speaker why not try some computer speakers on it.
i used to come home and while on batteries just plug my 396t up the way.
it used to cut out quite a bit, my girlfriends 396xt has done it a couple of times.
the way i test my volume is to hit hold on my county control channel.
i hope the quick and cheap fix works.
