Hi all, I just got the above handheld scanner and was wondering if anyone else has the same scanner and how they like it? I will be using rechargable batteries and will also have a scanner antenna on my car so I can use the unit when mobile. Any inputs welcome.

I have one of these and I really like it. I always liked the "close call" feature, works well for me. There is still a lot of analog radio activity out there and I get a lot of use out of this radio.
Scanner in a vehicle: a lot of states have laws regulating certain types of radio receivers ("scanners") in motor vehicles. Regardless of what a law may contain, law enforcement may question the receiver in your vehicle. I'm sure the state DMV website may contain some information about legal use of radio receivers in motor vehicles. It's worth checking into this before you find out the hard way.

Thanks kb2hpw. I will check out the DMV laws you speak of. Our local police and Highway Patrol are still available to listen to as well as the fire and emts. Our sheriff department went encrypted so they are not available.

At the State level it is legal to own a radio scanner in California as long as you are not using it while committing a crime. Some counties and cities may have additional restrictions.

Yes you are correct.In California, as long as you are not using the radio in the commission of a crime (and what the ham operator did was a crime) there are no restrictions on having a scanner.Unfortunately, a lot of cities here are switching to enctypted radio systems.
