If I don't use the 10K Ohm resistor is that ok? I've seen some places they don't use it and other places that do.

It is never a good idea to connect an internal circuit node directly to the outside world without isolation. In this case the risk of damage is small, but the 10 cent resistor is cheap insurance. The chip is an NJM3359 and if you look up the manufacturer's data sheet there is an application circuit showing pin 10 connected to a resistor followed by a capacitor to ground. I recommend doing it that way and ignoring the bad advice you may have found elsewhere.
