That seems like it would be contrary to the concept of scanning in which the radio awaits something happening on one of the programmed channels. If nothing happens for an hour (for example), you'd want it to give up and turn itself off?

Or are you thinking more of a timer that would just turn it off after a set time regardless of activity?

Just wondering.

Thank you for the reply Dick. We are just worried about accidently leaving the scanner on when the vehicle has been checked-in for the night (or week - sometimes), and drain the truck's starter battery. While there are many power failsafe hardware alternatives, having the scanner do an auto shutdown (in say 2 hours of no user interraction) seems the most cost effective. There is so much county traffic occuring (Law, Fire, Tactical, PW), that after 2 hours - when the timeout turns the power off - the operator will soon notice the abnormal quiet and do a manual power-ON (hi hi hi)

Just wire them to a circuit that is on/off with the ignition. No fancy "battery buddy" solutions required. You may even find that the vehicle fuse block has an empty spot or two you can wire it up to using the proper size fuse (5A is plenty). Otherwise you can tap off the fused side of something like the AM/FM radio, which is normally on/off with ignition. Neither of those models require constant 12V to retain memory or anything like that, so having them cycle on/off with the ignition or remaining without power for hours/days/weeks at a time isn't a problem.
