I ordered a Butel software package and found that I don't have a serial port. I purchased a serial to USB cable which cannot find the "com" port I then called Uniden and the service person told me that it was not possible to use any software program since the 780 cannot be interfaced with a USB port. Is there any way? ANy help would be appreciated.

That's horse ****. Oh, I'm sorry did I say that out loud? You need make sure that you install the software drivers for the USB to serial adapter. The sofware will create a virtual Comm Port when the adapter is plugged in to a USB slot. After that, you will be able to set up the ARC780 software to communicate via that port.

I've done that any number of times with a variety of 780s and computers with USB ports.

I have programmed tons of 780's with either a RS or generic USB to serial adapter. The key is getting the adapter correctly installed so it works.Maybe do some searching here through all the posts regarding getting the USB to serial adapter set up correctly.

Thanks

Thanks for your help. The cable is a Radio Shack single cord with a serial on one end and a usb on the other. I did get a prompt a couple of times that there was a problem with the installation. But I thought that was fixed. I also thought that maybe it was because the Butel was a demo version. Since it can be done this gives me hope to continue on trying. Wonder why Uniden guy would tell me that? :)
