I tried upgrading one of my 796Ds to version 3.29. It gets about 20 seconds into the process and then stops with a "communications error" popup on the PC screen. I can downgrade to 3.28 with no problem. I can also use a variety of control programs using the same serial port and cabling.

Yes, I uninstalled the previous versions before trying the ugrade.

I also tried different speeds on the 796D but changing that causes a different error immediately.

I downloaded BCD796Dv3.29.zip from the Uniden site, unzipped and used the included upgrader and data file. Windows 2000 PC.

Anyone successful upgrading their 796D to 3.29 ?

Look in other post, the answer is in there. After you download the update u have to copy and paste it to a different location. The post is on page 4. Look at message 77 .. answers the problem.

If you want to try one more thing...copy the BC296D_V3_29.scn into this location:

C:\Program Files\Uniden\BC_VUP\

Then run the program, and the BC296D_V3_29.scn should present itself for loading. Click on that file, and let her rip!

This is on a 796D, not a 296 or 396. I have the correct file for my scanner type and it is in the correct directory. The load file is BC796D_V3_29.scn for a 796D, not BC296Dxxxx.

My problem occurs 20 seconds after selecting the file and starting the actual upgrade procedure.

Thanks for the help anyway.

I had the same problem. Once you down load the update, when you run it it looks for the file in the same folder, so you have to find the file on your computer and cut and paste it to the updated folder. See my other post for a BETTER explaination.

The installation wants you to un-install the previous version of BC_VUP firmware updater, not the firmware.

This update addresses issues with Motorola P25 that do not include band tables.

· To install this update:

· 1. Download and unzip the file into a directory on your PC.

· 2. ***IMPORTANT*** If you have installed the BC_VUP software for any other Uniden product, uninstall that software before continuing.

· 3. Run “setup.exe” to install the BC_VUP firmware updater application for your BC796D.

· 4. Run the installed BC_VUP application. Follow the on-screen prompts to apply the update to your scanner.
