Okay, you're thinking, this guy must be kidding... Well, no.

It seems I can program an APCO trunked system into the radio just fine (I have 5 systems in it now and it works well), however how does one go about just programming a conventional VHF APCO P25 freq in a memory?

Nothing in the manual. I know how to do it on my 996, but this is plain silly.

For conventional it asks me if I want PL, CSQ, or DPL, but that's it for mode!

Trying to do it through the front panel.

Thanks.

Menu -> Scan option -> Conventional -> enter channel number
-> Frequency (number 1 on list) and if needed, Steps (number 6 on the list), then Alpha Tag it.

[EDIT: By default, after you enter the channel number, number 6-steps, comes up first. You can toggle that to Frequency by using the channel selector knob. END EDIT]

I have two P25 repeated (not trunked) frequencies in my 796D, which I don't remember programing in a particular mode.

A side note about P25 frequencies and having the priorty on: when holding on a P25 frequency, there is burst of noise when the Priority does its sweep. It is much more noticable on the 796 then on the 996.

I belive that the scanner with decode the digital on a conventional frequency on it's own.
As long as the digital card is installed in the scanner. There are a couple 800mhz
conventional repeaters in the province. Both the 785 and 796 decoded the digital signal
without any other adjustments.
