BC796D tape out audio level

Hello,

Does anyone have any experience with the "tape out" jack on the BC796D?

I am running the "tape out" into my PC sound card "line in" input per butel's ARC250PRO suggestion. But I have to turn the input gain all the way up in order to hear anything - sound level seems pretty low to me.

If I plug into the "mic" input then things are as I would expect.

Are people connecting "tape out" to "line in" or "mic" on their PC sound cards?

I don't have any experience with the 796; however, the first thing I would check is to make sure that your "Record" selection is "Line In" and not "Microphone". Remember, when you bring up the Volumn Control in Windows, the default window deals with the "Playback" options, the "Recording" (inputs) options deal with what is treated as the main "Input" channel, of which you can only have one selected. Get to it by selecting "Properties" under the "Options" menu item.

Thanks for the reply Lou.

The line input was selected - not the microphone, and this was on the recording options not the playback. I have tried this on two different PCs just to make sure I am not having problems with the sound card.

I found it useless for trunking.

1. Only works on ID search not in ID scan mode.
2. delay cuts off the first part of the TX
3. low frequency hum and a popping noise.
4. unstable output level.
5. uses stereo plug and the sig is not on the tip.

The good news is I found a way to correct all of this but have not
had the time to write the mod yet.

Please send me an email and I'll let you know how to do it.

Instead of doing that, take a look at this bit of software. IDTracker has been out for a while and is quite stable. David also keeps on top of reported problems and keeps the progam as updated as possible for freeware. It will solve all of those problems and give you the ability to keep a log of activity also.

Didn't know it would solve the rec output problem.
Can you explain how I can do that in ID scan mode?

I was referring to items 1 & 2 of the shopping list of things you mentioned. As to the acutal "output" from the radio, I assume you have tried a stereo/mono adapter.

As for when the recording takes place, IDTracker controls the audio input recording (through the sound card of course) it records and saves such recording in individual files based on frequency or Trunking ID. You choose what you want recorded (e.g. unknown, known, certain ID's, but you must enable the recording of the file on each item you want to record.

Guess I need to clear things up a bit because some might
not understand what I wrote and what I meant.

Feeding sound from the speaker extension output
is not an excepted way of getting clear audio.

It's always best to pick it up before it goes to the audio
amplifier circuit because the level is constant and much clearer.

That is what Uniden is doing at the REC output plug but they
built in a switching circuit that is software dependent to
turn it off and on. I don't know why but it's a pain in the
ass for the way I want to use it. So I re-wired it and bypassed
there dumb switching circuit and now it passes everything.
