I recently updated a BC 796D from ver. 3.27 to 3.29. Now whenever it stops
on a digital transmission all I hear is a machine gun like sound. Went back and checked all programming and everything is the same. Anyone else have this problem?

Did you make sure the digital card was enabled? It's possible the firmware update turned it off. Should be an easy fix

Digital card enabled. Checked everything. Tried another town and I still get the motorboat sound on transmissions. Can't fine tune the digital signal either.

Was there a firmware update for the 796D lately? I was just logged into my uniden account an it didn't indicate anything new for the 796D.

To fine tune the digital audio when you are receiving a signal press and hold 9 and it should put you into setting APCO 25 sound quality this covered in the owners manual page 51.

When I press and hold 9 while the radio is stopped on a digital talkgoup nothing happens.
It's as if it is not recognizing that there is even a digital signal. Just keep getting a machine gun/motorboat sound. The radio displays the current talkgroup and shows the frequency it's on but that's it. Card is installed and I get that message whenever I power up the radio.

v3.29 update has a bug that disables the card. You have to run the CARD ERROR FIX update.

Did you dowload and install BCi96DVUP_V1_03.zip 1.3? That file should correct your problem. Let us know. The rebanding firmware when released should be another challenge. Hope it goes better than it has with the 996.

I don't know what happened but it's working now. I ran the BCi96DVUP_V1_03.zip 1.3 update several weeks ago just before I did the ver. 3.29 update. I just now powered off the scanner re-ran the BCi96DVUP_V1_03.zip 1.3 which told me the card was already updated, but when I re-powered up again
the digital signals started coming in normally. Beats me. Chalk it up as a mystery for now. Thanks, though, to everyone who offered help.

While we're on the subject of firmware updates for the 796D, why is it that owners of these radios have to wait until January for firmware updates while the newer radios get their firmware updates first. Why not update the radios in the order they were manufactored? I have put up with the quirks these radios have since new and there has been no patchs that have helped the 796 from what I can tell. I would like the maching gunning digital noise gone from my 796 much like my 396 is now after the latest patchwork. I would also like the edacs beeps gone too like my 396T. Will any of this happen or are we just going to get a patch to fix the rebanding issue and thats it. If so I'll have a couple 796D's for sale.

I'm glad everything worked out good for you Moose. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe that card and scanner firmware updates are to be done concurrently. Accordingly, each will "read" the other. By rerunning the BCi96DVUP_V1_03.zip 1.3 update you literally forced the two to communicate because the scanner had to acknowledged the prior installation. As far as the rebanding firmware, I'd be willing to wait to see if Uniden gets it right on the first even second release. Unlike the BCi96DVUP_V1_03.zip 1.3 update I hope the installation instructions are in English.
